Campus Crimes: A Consideration

college, safety, college adventuresWhen visiting college campuses, it is always wise to consider the campus crime rate. Questions about this do not usually elicit much information from tour guides or admissions offices. Regarding this information, you’ll have to be a bit of a detective.  There are online sources, and when visiting, make time for a chat at the campus public safety office.

There are differing concerns regarding safety on a college campus. One important thing to check is dorm security, particularly on urban campuses. Who can come and go? What kind of security is there? Also, is the campus well lighted at night? Are there call boxes in case of trouble? Are there visible patrols?

Colleges and universities are mandated to give you crime statistics, but do your own checking. The US Department of Education provides this information and you can access it here. These statistics usually run 2 years old. Also, be sure and check the city, area or town the college is located in. Many crimes occur OFF campus.

Knowing the environment the school is located in is very important. It is best to know ahead of time, and to use the information in the decision making process.
