The freshmen 15 and Tracy

wes, climb, student blogThe freshmen 15? What freshmen 15, oh you mean the 15 pounds I’m in the process of losing? Ten down five to go. People talk about college and gaining weight as if they’re synonymous but this doesn’t have to be true. It’s actually quite simple to stay away from this weight. Find a physical activity that you love. Now this takes some searching, and it doesn’t have to be a conventional activity.
Take me for instance, running? No. Weight lifting? Not in the way you’re thinking. I am a climber, what do I climb? Everything, rocks, buildings, cliffs, indoor rock walls. I do this five days a week, and I wish I could do it more. The mind is willing but the flesh is weak. In January I weighed 270 lbs, now I weigh 242 lbs. During the summer I hit a plateau, I couldn’t lose more, but when I got to college I found out that so many other people climb, and that outdoor climbing is so close. California has not only some of the best climbing in the country, but some of the best climbing in the world. Everyone wants to climb at Yosemite. Climbing has become more than a sport it has become an obsession. Maybe your sport is kayaking, maybe you like hiking. Working out three times a week will help you to avoid the freshman 15 maybe you’ll eventually find an obsession of your own.

On a sadder note and I know it is late, but the death of a friend. I met Tracy Fisher through Colleen, a fellow blogger. When I met her I noticed immediately how outgoing she was. When I went to Richardson High School senior year I saw Tracy every day and she was always so happy to see me. She always had a big smile on her face. She was talented, smart, and had a rare energy. I will miss her. Sometimes I see people post on her wall on facebook, and the things they say bring me close to tears. Everyone cared so much about her. Things like this are unfair, and wrong. It shouldn’t happen but it does and we all have to live with the hole that death leaves.
Thats just the way it is.
