The University of Miami is located in beautiful Coral Gables, a pricey suburb of Miami. This lush, tropical campus is 20 minutes from the beach, an hour from Key Largo, and 10 minutes to downtown Miami. Academics are strong here, but students at UM also know how to have fun.
Former US Secretary of Health and Human Services, President Donna Shalala has taken Miami to international status as a student centered, forward thinking academic institution since she took office in 2001. Business Week has rated her as one of the top managers in higher education, and she was recently awarded the Dole Leadership Prize, the first woman to receive it.
Miami is famous for it’s excellent Marine Science program, the state of the art Frances L Wolfson School of Communication, and of course, the Frost School of Music. Miami even boasts Cane Records, it’s own recording label. Miami has a seven year premed program for qualifying students, and a comprehensive honors program.
Miami has an international flavor, you hear many languages spoken while wandering around the campus. There is a definite Latin flavor as well as New York accents….nearly 10% of the freshman class hails from NY!
Miami has an interesting structure, like Yale it has five residential colleges, each directed by a master ( a senior faculty member ) who arranges social events, lectures, concerts, etc etc. Each college has it’s own meal plan and restaurants, and yes, there is a kosher plan.
Oh, and if you like sports, there is football, baseball, basketball….the whole enchilada…complete with major rivalry with Florida State.
