Located on a hilltop in Austin, Tx, St. Edward’s University overlooks the city skyline. The campus is lovely, with shady trees, inviting lush grass, and contrasting architecture. St Edward’s is a Catholic university which embraces a global perspective, and I saw quite a bit of diversity in the student body while walking around campus. St Ed’s mascot is the Hilltopper, a mountain goat, and their hand signal is similar to the Longhorn, just bend your fingers to illustrate the goat!
Our tour guides, Leslie and Claire, were both from Texas and in the Honors program. the Honors Program is for talented and passionate students who take 7 Honors Program Seminars and must complete an Honors Thesis to graduate. Honors students must maintain a 3.5 GPA in the Honors classes. Honors also offers smaller classes and are writing intensive.
St. Edward’s wants to help students succeed. Their tutoring and academic assistance programs are very accessible. The writing center is particularly popular with new students. Student services are available in Moody Student Center and include academic workshops, disability services, and one on one tutoring.
Some of the academic buildings look a bit tired, but there is renovation going on, and the new residence halls are incredible. Three new residence halls are Lady Bird Johnson, Hunt, and Lemans. Cafes in these halls boast steak and a Mexican cafe with live music! Not too tough to take!
Academics include both undergraduate and graduate programs. The undergraduate population is around 3500, and freshman must live on campus (not a hardship! You’ll be glad when you see the campus and residence halls!) If you like Austin but want a smaller, more personal educational environment, take a look at St. Edward’s University! And tell them Tam sent you!
Can’t wait to attend this university!
