Blog from LFC! Part 2 Involvement

This is my second year to be an active member in Latinos Unidos (LU) and United Asia (UA) organizations. I absolutely love both of these organizations because the members really make it enjoyable! I have been and still am a member of the Choir, and vocal student. I also try to attend the yoga classes on campus!

LU is a very successful and well-organized group, probably because the president is Jaime, who is a very organized, well liked and a respected student at school. I plan on running for a position on the LU executive board called Public Relations for next year; either that or Historian. One of my most favorite events that I absolutely love that LU hosts is the ARAMARK Appreciation Dinner. I helped with that event last year and I am very excited about it for this year. ARAMARK is the food company that is at our school. LU hosts a dinner for all the workers and their families. It is a great time for us to bond with the workers over dinner, and to really show how much we appreciate all they do for us.

I am on the executive board this year for UA which is not nearly as big of a group as LU, but this year we have been working, and planning on ways to make the group more successful. My specific position is Public Relations, which is basically creating all the advertisement for events that our group hosts. Melanie is also my partner! I have enjoyed working on the executive board for UA so far this year because I get to work with some of my best friends- Minxu, Chao, Dong-Ping, Kumiko, Melanie, and Laura.

Lake Forest College has two choirs, the Women’s choir and Concert Choir.. Concert choir is the chorale group that I am involved in. It’s a mixed group of about 20 or so members. There is an audition process in order to be placed in the choirs. Basically the concert choir has a repertoire of music that’s on a more difficult level. Choir is two hours a day, two times a week. This year choir became a course that counts for ¼ of a credit.

This is my second year to be taking private vocal lessons at school. I get lessons for free because every student who takes the music course called the Fundamentals of Music, gets to take private vocal or instrumental lessons for free. Private lessons are ½ of a credit. I have an amazing vocal coach, she really knows her stuff. We are working on my higher register and making fuller sounds. We are required to perform at four “Master Classes” which is where all the vocal students perform one solo for the rest of the vocal students and then everyone critiques the singer. There is also one big performance at the end of each semester.

Yoga is or was a big part of my life this past summer. Now that I’m back in school, I’m super busy and I find it hard to attend the two classes a week that are offered. I wish the school would have more yoga classes, like every day and more than one time a day. That would be amazing!
