Hello to anyone that decided to read my blog! My name is Kara, Im 21 years old and going to school at Morehead State University in Kentucky. I am originally from Mt. Orab, Ohio, a small town east of Cincinnati. I’m the middle of three kids. I have a little sister that plans to come to Morehead next year and live on campus. Her boyfriend goes here also, he’s in his first year now. My brother, who is 24, graduated college from Mt. St. Joseph with a degree in math and chemistry and got a job with Proctor & Gamble right out of college. He worked there for a while, and recently joined the peace corps and is now in Africa teaching. He has a blog site so we can keep up with his life and see pictures of things he’s doing while he’s there.
So how I ended up in Morehead ….. My parents and I didnt get along while I was in high school because I was a typical teenage girl. I didn’t want to listen to anything or anyone and could’nt wait to be out on my own. So naturally, I wanted to get far away from everything at home. I only looked at a couple colleges because I wasn’t very serious about it. I was tired of school and the thought of paying for MORE school wasn’t my idea of a good time. I had no idea what I wanted my major to be so I chose teaching as an easy out. Morehead has an excellent teaching program so that weighed heavily on my decision. However, after one semester of teaching classes, I decided it wasn’t for me. I switched my major to communications studying broadcasting. I stuck with that for two semesters and then changed again to my current major: communications studying advertising and public relations.
I lived on campus my first two years at school in the same building, Mignon Tower. I only moved floors between my freshman and sophomore years. I ended up with 3 roommates that I didn’t know. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have one normal one, Kimberly, that quickly became one of my best friends. We lived together our whole time on campus, and our third year we decided to get a house off campus with another girl we knew. It was a big eye opener, it doesn’t seem like much money until the bills start coming in. But we adjusted and everything was great, I really enjoyed being able to come “home” and have my own room to go to and be able to fix dinner…not ramen noodles. One of my roommates graduated so she was moving out and Kimberly got a co-op job in Louisville for this semester so she moved out also. This left me needing 2 new roommates if I wanted to keep the house. Before I talk about my new roommates, I’ll give you the background on how I met them.
I came to Morehead dating “that guy” that every girls parents hate: the self conscious control freak that didn’t want me going to college so far away. We were supposed to get married and run away from all our problems at home. Obviously that didn’t last long because once I was away from the situation, I realized I was wasting my time and, (though I would never admit this to my parents), they were right about him. I didn’t date again for a long time, I went to parties and made tons of new friends instead. I spent most of my time hanging out with the Theta Chi fraternity on campus and became close friends with most of the boys. That’s where I first met one of my roommates now: Donnie Bowling, aka…Tiny. We always acknowledged each other when we ran into each other at a party and since I spent a lot of time at the fraternity house we got to know each other on a casual level. We were at the bar together at the end of my junior year hanging out with everyone and in conversation we started talking about where we were living the next year. Ended up he needed somewhere to live because he didn’t want to live in the fraternity house anymore and I needed a roommate…so after a few drinks, we decided he would live with me. He’s loud and obnoxious and he’s not around a whole lot. But we love him. And he’s a musician, a very talented one at that.
My other roommate and I met through an exboyfriend. I made a bet with a guy in my computer class, Tyler, my freshman year about the Ohio State/Michigan football game. (I won of course.) The next year I passed him on campus around the time of the game again and we made the same bet…which I again won =) We started talking a lot more after that because we lived in the same dorm and ended up dating shortly after. He was from Cynthiana, Kentucky and, after going home with him a few times I quickly became friends with all of his friends, which is where I met my other roommate, Brittane…aka “Lover”….(our nickname for each other) She was dating one of Tyler’s friends and the 4 of us spent a lot of time together and it didn’t take long for Lover and I to become best friends! Last march, we all went to Tennessee on spring break and rented a chalet for the weekend and when we got back from our trip, Lover and I became single in the same week. We’ve both come a long way since then though!
So now Tiny, Lover and I live in the house with my dog, Roxy, who is a brown beagle-mix I saved from the pound last year. She is hyper and very lovable…and is learning many new tricks thanks to Lover! Aside from classes, I work at Save-a-Lot which is right down the road from my house and I usually work about 25 hours a week. I’m not involved in any sorority stuff but Lover and I are very good friends with the girls that live across the street from us who are Chi Omegas, so we get to hear about a lot of the events that go on. Also, Lover and I play on a volleyball team wednesday nights with some people I work with and we TRY to work out every once in a while.
I think this makes for a suitable first blog. More to come with the next one!!
