Leadership Studies? What is that? A major? Sometimes. A program? Sometimes. Schools that offer Leadership Studies are on to something. What does a complex world need in every field? Leadership, sound, responsible leadership. How is it taught? Through the liberal arts, an education which teaches critical thinking, problem solving, due diligence in research, history, sociology, ethics…and the ins and outs of the leadership/follower relationship. Sound interesting? VERY.
The University of Richmond, Claremont McKenna and Loyola Marymount College are members of The Initiative of Leadership and the Liberal Arts. These three schools work together in order to “…integrate topics of responsible leadership across liberal arts disciplines. The three-school collaboration has included the development of Interdisciplinary, team-taught courses, undergraduate student research, and workshops that provide guidelines for other colleges interested in incorporating courses or other resources into their curriculum.” The program at the University of Richmond, The Jepson School of Leadership Studies, is quite selective.
What can you do with a major in Leadership Studies? Most Jepson students go into business or on to graduate school. Leadership skills and knowledge are, of course, helpful on any career path.
