I believe that the purpose of a college education is to expand the horizons and the knowledge of an individual. It is not just about academic material and grades, it is about exposure to new ideas, new theories, and new perspectives. I look at high school as the opportunity for a student to learn the basics, and college as the vehicle to enlarge one’s vision. Students and parents need to look at college as a growth experience as well as a sound investment. Experiencing diversity and learning basic life skills is a valuable experience.
Many parents and students come to me with the “brand name” disease, or the “Greek” disease, believing that there are just a few colleges worth going to. There are students who are not suited for a liberal arts education, and I steer these students to institutions where they can do well and receive an education that will benefit them in their lives. I do believe that many students have untapped potential, and for many the best place to tap it is a small liberal arts environment.
It always surprises me when students have no interest in current events, social causes or environmental issues. Since I am in private practice, I have seen students who are spoiled, who truly give no thought to others or to the world around them. More often, I see students who have not been challenged, who are curious, who could make a difference in their world, and possibly the world at large, and who need guidance and discussion and inspiration. These are the students I like to work with and help the most.
Going into private practice was something I wanted to do not just for students from families who can afford my services but for students who cannot. My education, my experience, everything I learn also helps teens that cannot afford to pay. Volunteer work and speaking engagements are important to me.
Education is so important. I tell my students that education is not a formula, education is experience, it is critical thinking, it is having the knowledge base to know how to solve problems and how to evaluate information. Education enlarges one’s world, it opens one’s eyes, and it creates personal growth. The world needs all kinds of people with all kinds of talents, but I do believe it also needs individuals capable of thinking and critically evaluating information. Knowledge is power…hopefully it is the power to make changes for the better.
