Many may think that women’s colleges are outdated, but think again: at a woman’s college the leadership roles are taken by women, the opportunities for participation in academics are for women, so it is not surprising that Bryn Mawr, like its sisters, produces leaders and individualists who choose their own paths. These students have access to strong, amazing female role models. They also have access and cross-registration with Haverford, Swarthmore and Penn.
As you may have guessed, Bryn Mawr is on the Philadelphia Main Line, less than an hour from Philly and in a very upscale small town. Bryn Mawr’s Quaker roots and emphasis on intellectualism and individualism creates an interesting mix of women on the beautiful, tree lined campus. And yes, there are guys around….mostly at Haverford, where Bryn Mawr students have close access to social life.
Bryn Mawr has an Honor Code that is alive and well: it reflects Quaker roots and ties in with self determination. The Dorms (where 60% of rooms are singles, and freshmen are mixed with upperclasswomen) vote every semester on the rules that will dominate the House. The Honor Code has both Academic and Social components, Social code includes respect and advocacy; Academic code has self-governance and self-scheduled exams as values.
Bryn Mawr academics offers Social sciences, Humanities, Sciences, two 2 graduate schools on campus, a value for undergraduate research, and a Strong computer science dept (Robotics and AI).
Creative writing is a minor, but English at Bryn Mawr is writing extensive.
If you want a beautiful campus, an intellectual environment, a chance to develop your leadership skills, and access to some of the most prestigious academic institutions around, you ought to take a look at Bryn Mawr! And tell them Tam sent you!
