College is hard.

friends, college adventures
I don’t mean that in the sense that the classes are hard. Not that they’re exactly easy. But just the whole experience. Yeah, its fun. You’ve got your parties and your school activities, and of course the infamous sports (although maybe not exactly at Baylor). That part is great. But they don’t prepare you for the loneliness.

For the lack of a best friend, a shoulder to cry on. Everyone you meet at college is new. You can’t just go crying to them about your problems. That’s way too awkward. Plus they don’t know you like your friends at home do.

I loved winter break. It was fantastic to be with all of the people that really know me and love me. Now I’m feeling rather lost back at school. I know I should be having the time of my life but I just feel like I’m in the wrong place. I wish I could be in two places at once. My family needs me. I need my friends, otherwise I don’t know how I’m going to get through everything that life has thrown my way.

I made a new years resolution to be more optimistic. I guess this isn’t really an optimistic update, but I just thought that you should know that it’s difficult to make new friendships. Lifelong, cry when things get hard friendships.

That said, I do have many wonderful friends I’ve made at college that have the potential to be that for me. Now its just a matter of getting over that mountain. Here’s to a better tomorrow!

  1. Your feelings are completely normal, Madeline. You are at the “tween time”, meaning you are not yet to the point where you have made close friendships at college and you are missing the friendships you had in high school. The closeness of college friendships will come, but it takes time. Thankfully we are in the age of Skype and texting, so you can stay in touch with your oldest friends (within reason, of course.) Continue to let us know how you are feeling! Thanks for sharing.
