Juniors have recently received the results of their October PSATs. So far, every junior I know improved dramatically from their sophomore year scores. It is important for juniors to take standardized tests this spring and not wait until fall of the senior year. Take the SAT and the ACT, decide which test shows your abilities to your advantage, and concentrate your effort on that standardized test.
I agree with the Education Conservancy’s statement that a student does not need to take a standardized test more than twice. If you are an organized and focused person you can buy a test prep book and “do it yourself”, if you need a distraction free environment you may need a test prep tutor or class. First, though, I recommend that you take both tests this spring. Who knows? You may be happy with your scores and in that case, you are finished with standardized testing and can concentrate on the other parts of your college application process. If you are not a “good tester”, take heart: many, many colleges and universities are joining the “no standardized test required” crowd (see www.fairtest.org for a list). Most studies show that the SAT does not predict college success as much as grades and other factors do. More and more colleges are catching on and offering paths to admission which do not require submission of test scores.
For SAT test dates, go to College Board. The next test date is March 13 with a registration deadline of February 4. For ACT test dates go to ACT. The next test date is February 6 but the registration deadline has passed, however, you may be able to go “stand by” or “walk in”. The ACT is next scheduled for April 10 with a deadline of March 5.
Good luck!
