Pills, Bills and Refills

crohns disease, ill
Being sick in college; it  really isn’t fun. Of course, I don’t just get the common cold. I’m always sick with my wonderful Crohn’s Disease. Coming to college, I knew I’d at least have one flare up from the stress of moving away from home and the life I had set in stone. Changes cause stress. Stress causes flares. Therefore, change=flares.

I was relatively prepared for the flares. Last semester around the middle of September I ended up in the hospital. I guess reality really hit me when I told my closest friends that I was in the hospital and they weren’t even slightly surprised.  I guess I didn’t realize how normal it was for me to be sick until no one was surprised at my hospital visit.

I’m now used to the idea of sometimes sick and not able to go to class, or go out on the weekends. Usually my illness doesn’t bother me that much. But today I almost broke down. I’m tired of having to drop everything and have to run to the bathroom. I’m tired of all the pills and refills, and then some more refills. While the bills aren’t that much of an issue (because my health is obviously something worth paying for), it still gets really tiresome to always have to go to the doctor, to eat more expensive food because the cheaper food will make me sick, to buy so many medications. One time a friend saw my room for the first time and told me I could run a pharmacy out of my room. He was right.

Usually I don’t like to complain. I’m generally a happy person. But I’m just getting really tired of my intestines.

  1. I am so sorry you are having issues! I know exactly how you feel…it is difficult to be ill or in pain while others seem to have all the energy and good health in the world….it is totally unfair. I spent the first year out of high school having a spinal fusion and learning to walk again, and the pain and issues surrounding it have followed me all of my life. Thank you for sharing, and always feel that you can vent here on the blog!
