I had an amazing winter break and definitely wasn’t ready to come back to school (I had my first ever WHITE CHRISTMAS!), but of course, I didn’t have much of a choice
I already feel that this semester is going to be better than my first for a couple of reasons: (1) It doesn’t seem like I have any jerk teachers this semester, (2) I’m taking my first actual Music Ed course (more about that later), (3) I HAVE A CAR!!!!!!!!, and (4) I FREAKING HAVE A CAR!!!!!!
For any student that’s going to school on a decently small campus knows that the cabin fever setting can set in awfully fast. Especially when you’re not quite as social as everyone else seems to be. Now I’m able to run my own errands on my own time and discover more of San Antonio. I really do go to school in a great city and without a car it’s really hard to know that.
On MLK Jr. Day I walked in the largest MLK March in the country. And unlike most MLK marches…this one doesn’t go through downtown. It goes through a part of San Antonio that most people don’t get to see. It was really eye-opening and inspiring to be a part of something like that.
As far as classes go I’m still in music theory, keyboarding (piano), and aural skills, but obviously the next level. I have to take 4 semesters of each. It’s crazy to believe that after this semester I’ll be half way done
That’s pretty cool.
I’m also taking a mass media class which is a communications class to meet some of the qualifications for common curriculum. It’s not really that interesting and some of it is common sense. It’s not really a blow-off class though (I’m sort of hoping that no college class would be that way). I had my first test today and I think I did all right, but I probably should have studied a little bit more.
I’m also taking yoga! I was really excited when I signed up for this. It’s pretty cool. I’ve always wanted to do yoga, but never really felt that I had the time for it. We learn balance, flexibility, and strength poses and then always cool down with some very relaxing stretching. I really wish I had started before because I always feel better about myself and my health when I walk out of that class. Who knew yoga could do that?! Haha. Not me. Looks like I may have found another stress reliever.
My first-year seminar is awesome. It’s called “The Human Condition” and is basically a discussion course about well…being human. We have different books to read throughout the semester some include Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, Angels in America by Tony Kushner, and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. We then use those readings and discuss them in class and how they can end up relating to our lives and what kinds of thoughts were brought up when we read them. We have four papers due throughout the semester, but they’re only 1000 papers so they’re not too stressful.
Then I have my music education class. We meet once a week and are going to eventually discuss all of the different types of music education (choral, instrumental, elementary and so on) and we also get to go out to public schools in the area and observe classes! I’m so excited about it
And then at the end of the semester we have a “final project” where we have to think of something to teach an elementary school music class. I’m sort of nervous about that since I don’t really know how to interact with elementary school kids in a music setting, but that’s part of what I’m here to learn, right?
