Higheredmorning.com posted an article listing the ten most irritating application mistakes according to college counselors and admission representatives. Ready? Here they are:
1. Spelling and Grammar mistakes. These are very, very irritating! This is a college application! Don’t you proofread????
2. Filling out the application online….then forgetting to submit it.
3. Forgetting to sign a paper application.
4. Answering questions incorrectly, like “county” and “country”. As a professor (and a college consultant) it drives me crazy when students write “except” when they mean “accept”, or “their” for “there”. Grrrr.
5. Listing idiotic things like “talking on the phone” as an activity. Get a grip. Talking on the phone is not an extracurricular activity or a hobby!
6. Not talking to their college counselor before submitting everything. Kids, sit down with the counselor and make sure you KNOW what is on your transcript.
7. Terrible handwriting. With online applications and WORD, there is no excuse for handwriting anything!
8. Ridiculous emails like hotbunnygirl@easy.com. PLEASE keep it professional!
9. Students don’t check their email, missing important notices from the colleges about incomplete applications, etc.
10. They get essay help from mom and dad. This is a student process, mom and dad should have minimal input.
Can you think of any others? These are bad enough!
