Everyone loves psychology…but do you really know what it is? According to Wikipedia, psychology “is an academic and applied discipline which involves the scientific study of human (or animal) mental functions and behaviors. In this field, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist, and is classified as a social or behavioral scientist. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the underlying physiological and neurological processes.” There are many possiblities for this major.
Payscale.com lists the most popular jobs for psychology majors. Remember, in order to become a clinical counselor you must have continued education….in many cases, a PhD. There are also Licensed Professional Counselors who work with patients. The major can also be used in business, or public relations. Obviously, a knowledge of human behavior and what makes people tick can come in handy in just about any field or career path. As you can see on the chart above, Human Resources Manager is a very popular, and well paid, career for Psych majors, as is “head hunting”. Being a head hunter means you are placing individuals into jobs, a field that requires a knowledge of people.
Most colleges have a psychology major, but there are many different kinds of psychology, so be sure to do your homework. There is bio-psychology, social psychology, human development, cognitive psychology, behavioral psychology, criminal profiling….the list goes on….and on….and on! You may want to take a high school course in Psychology if possible, or try an Intro to Psychology your first year of college.
