I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Lake Forest College this week. It is a beautiful time for a visit as the trees are budding and the flowers are blooming. Lake Michigan is blue and beautiful. For those who don’t know the Chicago area, Lake Michigan is more like a sea than a “lake”, and Lake Forest College is right next to it!
I had a wonderful tour by LFC tour guide Laura, and my student (and close family friend) Matille. The tour included meeting many students…many happy students! It was wonderful to meet so many engaged, bright, and involved students. Finals are upon them, and they are studying hard, but they still took the time to greet me and chat. It is also encouraging to see the diversity at Lake Forest College. ( For those unfamiliar with the Chicago area, Lake Forest is a very well-to-do area which is mostly white.) One of the strongest programs at LFC is International Relations, and they have done a tremendous job at bringing in International students.
The admission staff is friendly and willing to go the extra mile to welcome potential and new students. One of my current students, Maddy, will be attending Lake Forest in the fall. I believe she will find a home at Lake Forest. The academics are rigorous and the emphasis on solid writing skills is absolute. All students I spoke with said that courses were challenging at LFC, but that they loved the professors (some of whom live on campus!). Close relationships between students and professors are the norm. My tour guide, Laura, is double majoring in International Relations and Anthropology, and is doing a year long study abroad next year in Bolivia! Most students do study abroad.
Two other items deserve attention: Lake Forest offers low SES students from Chicago full scholarships. They also offer their students many trips into the city (30 minutes by train), and at risk youth attend events at the campus. The other event I enjoyed hearing about was Soup and Stories. Soup and Stories is a regular event on campus, and students share their life stories with everyone who attends. Matille, one of my guides, said she recently attended one and was inspired by the stories she heard. She now plans to attend next fall and share her own story.
Lake Forest College has a lot to offer! Check out more photos on my College Adventures Facebook page. Challenging academics, beautiful location, bright and friendly students, and engaged, involved faculty. Personal attention and personal involvement is the key here. Sound good? Check out Lake Forest College, and tell them Tam sent you!
