I thoroughly enjoyed my recent trip to Chicago. One of the perks of being a college consultant is traveling to college campuses and talking with students. DePaul University is a very cool campus! Lincoln Park is a tree lined, red bricked section of Chicago with the L (elevated train, their subway system) clattering about, trendy restaurants, clubs, coffee shops, brownstones and a whole bunch of students running around, even on a Sunday!
Lincoln Park is DePaul’s largest campus. It does have others. There is the Loop Campus in Chicago and public transportation can easily take DePaul students from one campus to another. Lincoln Park has the College of Liberal Arts, School of Education, School of Music and the Theater School. The Loop has the College of Commerce, the College of Communication, College of Computing and Digital Media, School for New Learning and the School of Law. DePaul partnered with Roosevelt University and Columbia College Chicago to build the University Center of Chicago, an 18-story residence hall at the intersection of State and Congress Streets. Most DePaul students live on the Lincoln Park campus.
DePaul University is named for a 17th century French priest who valued philanthropy, Saint Vincent de Paul. The school values community service and diversity along with strong academics. Originally named St. Vincent’s College, DePaul University was founded in 1898 by the Congregation of the Mission priests and brethren, known as the Vincentians. They founded the university to serve Roman Catholic children of immigrants. DePaul also has suburban campuses in Rolling Meadows, Des Plaines, Oak Forest and Naperville. The four suburban campuses primarily serve part-time professional students completing undergraduate and graduate degrees. DePaul is a very visible presence within the Chicago area and is the largest Catholic university in the US.
DePaul’s academic include core courses. The university knows that students will have three or four or more careers after graduation and so it values a curriculum strong in critical thinking and problem solving. Freshman year students have a First Year Program. Fall quarter introduces students to Chicago and emphasizes writing, communication, math, technological skills and the mission of service. The city becomes your classroom. Sophomore year’s program is Multiculturalism in America, junior year has an experiential learning experience, and the senior year a capstone course and project.
DePaul has much to offer! Visit and tell them Tam sent you!

DePaul University has a beautiful campus! You have to see the DePaul neighborhood in Lincoln Park to get a feel for yourself. It’s the best urban college campus in the nation. DePaul University is really a hip, cool place to go to college. DePaul’s academics are top notch. I like it better than Boston College and Georgetown. Together, these three schools are the best urban Catholic universities in the nation.
