Travels with Tam: Northwestern University

Northwestern University

Nortwestern University was founded in 1851 to serve the northwest territories….Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. Not exactly what we consider the northwest now! The campus is truly beautiful and only a block or so from Lake Michigan. It is not a regional school anymore, but a well known university. Northwestern is noted for its academic excellence.

Northwestern has so many excellent academic programs I don’t know where to start….there is the Honors Program in Medical Education, a program designed for gifted students who want medical school. 1000 apply, but only 20 or so are accepted to the program which grants automatic acceptance to Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago as well as to the undergrad program at Northwestern. The program takes the pressure off of students by granting admission to medical school.

Nortwestern University has an incredible list of alums, you can find them here. In all areas, Northwestern alums excel: sports, music, business, arts, journalism, photography….strong, talented students go into Northwestern, and they continue to achieve after they leave. Northwestern provides a strong, rigorous academic experience and teaches students leadership and determination.

Northwestern has great residential life. A third of incoming students choose to live in a “residential college”, a cohesive community that continues to teach outside the classroom. There are 11 residential colleges at Northwestern which are both thematic and multithematic. Some focus on a specific major area such as art, business, science…others have multiple areas of interest. A faculty member serves the residential college as a “master”, and many events and activities happen throughout the year, giving students many opportunities for cultural and intellectual connections. Other colleges who offer “residential colleges” include Yale and the University of Miami.

Lake Michigan

I had a nice visit to Northwestern in April, I also enjoyed Evanston, a great college town…everything is so close to downtown Chicago! If you are a very strong student with excellent test scores and seek academic rigor and proximity to a large city, I urge you to take a look at Northwestern! Tell them Tam sent you.
