You have to see the DePaul neighborhood in Lincoln Park to get a feel for yourself. It's the best urban college campus in the nation. DePaul University is really a hip, cool place to go to college. DePaul's academics are top notch. I like it better than Boston College and Georgetown. Together, these three schools are the best urban Catholic universities in the nation. We all love our kids, and I couldn't agree more that we need to let them take the " lead " in making their own decisions at this stage in their life. Great advice and spoken from the heart! Comment on Bullying and being Gay by Renee http://collegeadventures.net/blog/2011/01/26/bullying-gay/comment-page-1/#comment-3404 Renee Tue, 30 Aug 2011 16:32:39 +0000 http://collegeadventures.net/blog/?p=3332#comment-3404 If I go back and remember my high school years I have to say that I do recall some kids who were bullied, turning out gay. I never meet them but these days with Facebook you can find people and I see that they are gay. If only bullying could be better controlled we could help prevent this. Comment on Why Parents should leave their college kids alone by Lee Jones http://collegeadventures.net/blog/2011/08/26/parents-leave-college-kids/comment-page-1/#comment-3393 Lee Jones Fri, 26 Aug 2011 19:24:17 +0000 http://collegeadventures.net/blog/?p=3577#comment-3393 I agree. We had our now college freshman devise his packing list and, once we arrived in his college town, his dorm shopping list. He's thought of a few more things--as his older brother did--and has taken steps to have us ship them from home or order them himself. When he checked in on-campus, we accompanied him, and helped him schlep things from car to dorm. It didn't occur to any of us that we should stay and help him unpack. How would he make it "his" room if mom and dad set it up, or chose the items for it? We laid the foundation for this by shifting responsibility for shopping for clothes, purchasing and reselling textbooks, getting haircuts and setting up doctor and dentist appointments in high school (especially the junior and senior years). We also had a light hand on choices for electives and extracurricular activities. This approach allowed our sons to practice decision making and develop confidence in their own choices. Of course, the timetable for each teen taking on all these responsibilities will vary; it's not one size fits all. But important to prepare them for college socially and emotionally as well as academically. I agree. Comment on College for those with Asperger’s Syndrome by M. Fernandez http://collegeadventures.net/blog/2010/01/02/college-aspergers-syndrome/comment-page-1/#comment-3319 M. Fernandez Mon, 08 Aug 2011 19:48:15 +0000 http://collegeadventures.net/blog/?p=1778#comment-3319 My son is 25 and will be starting his second semester in Political Science at the end of this month. He has not been formaly diagnosed due to lack of insurance but he has taken all kinds of on line test and has not doubts that he has Aspergers. Besides the fact that a Psychiatrist in the family having AS patients agrees with him. Would a diagnose from a doctor in Mexico be good enough to get help to enter one of the CLE locations? he is attending a regular college in San Diego, but I think the experience of CLE is exactly what he needs. Do you have any advice as what we need to get the kind of help mentioned on your CLE Blog? I thank you in advance! Bravo, Maddy! I'm very proud of you! I luckily haven't been in that sort of situation, yet! And hopefully I won't have to experience it! It's good to know that there are some smart people out there, such as your roommates and yourself, who know how to handle complicated situations so well!
